New P/PV Briefs Focus on Integration of Services in Schools and the Ninth Grade Transition
P/PV's GroundWork series summarizes available evidence on a variety of social policy topics. The first issue, The Case for School-Based Integration of Services, reviews literature on the potential benefits of simultaneously providing healthcare, out-of-school-time learning and family support services in schools. The second issue, Paving the Way for Success in High School and Beyond, focuses on the transition from middle school to ninth grade—its importance, associated challenges for youth and suggestions for easing the transition.

P/PV's High School Students as Mentors Featured in Youth Today
This Youth Today article explores findings from High School Students as Mentors, by Carla Herrera, Tina J. Kauh, Siobhan M. Cooney, Jean Baldwin Grossman and Jennifer McMaken, examining some of the ways Big Brothers Big Sisters of America is working to improve training for high school mentors. Carla Herrera is quoted throughout, concluding that "there are things you can definitely do to bump up what these high school volunteers are capable of" and that they "need something different and something extra than what you would give adults." Overview

For many years, P/PV has developed and tested programs designed to help young people reach their full potential. While many such programs are operated in distinct community-based settings, we have increasingly seen that schools can also serve as important centers for youth and their families to access much-needed supports, including mentoring, health care, enrichment experiences, and public benefits and services.
