Congratulations to the Members of the 2010 sector strategies prac.ti.cum!
The sector strategies prac.ti.cum is a nine-month intensive experience designed to foster the development of sectoral partnerships in New York City by providing participants with an understanding of successful collaborations as well as support in developing their own approach. The members of this year's prac.ti.cum—which is focused on the healthcare sector—can be viewed here.



P/PV Report Cited in Huffington Post Article
An editorial in The Huffington Post by Bob Giloth and Maureen Conway details the need for sector-specific workforce development. It cites the findings of P/PV's Job Training That Works, noting that "workers trained in such sector-based approaches earned more money and were more likely to remain employed than similar workers not chosen for the programs."



Tools for Workforce Practitioners Newly Available for Download!
Four guides previously offered only in hard copy are now available for download: netWORKS offers practical ideas on how organizations can incorporate networking into their programs for low-income job seekers; Job Development Essentials and Employment Retention Essentials aim to help job developers improve placement and retention; and Here to Stay provides businesses with hands-on advice for hiring, retaining and advancing hourly-wage workers.

Working Dads: Final Report on the Fathers at Work Initiative presents findings from P/PVs evaluation of Fathers at Work, a national demonstration funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, designed to help low-income noncustodial fathers increase their employment and earnings, become more involved in their children's lives, and provide them with more consistent financial support. An accompanying executive summary can be found here.



Overview

Employment issues have been at the forefront of our work since we began operations in 1978. Current projects include: testing the efficacy of promising sectoral employment and alternative staffing models; building the capacity of workforce development leaders; and working to define benchmarks of "good performance" for the workforce development field.

Job Training That Works: Findings from the Sectoral Employment Impact Study
This issue of P/PV In Brief presents the results of a two-year study conducted by P/PV with support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. The random assignment evaluation found that high-quality sector-focused job training programs produced significant impacts for participants, including increases in earnings and employment.

Major Initiatives

Benchmarking Project
This project aims to establish standards that will allow workforce development organizations to compare their performance to others in the field.

Career Advancement Academies
This project will evaluate the efforts of community colleges across three regions of California to provide bridges to college and high-wage careers for under-prepared young adults.

College and Career Connections Fund
Acting as the project's intermediary organization, P/PV is working closely with community-based organizations in Riverside and San Bernardino counties in California to help disconnected, low-income youth reconnect with employment and postsecondary educational options.

Gulf Coast Alternative Staffing Initiative
This project aims to help Gulf Coast organizations develop Alternative Staffing Organizations that will connect low-income, displaced and disadvantaged Gulf Coast residents with employment.

Job Opportunity Investment Network
A funding collaborative of several major foundations and city and state agencies aimed at addressing the workforce needs of Philadelphia's disadvantaged workers and employers.

New York City Sectors Initiative
(a project of the Workforce Innovation Fund)

A venture to create a new model of workforce development in New York City, linking service delivery to key economic and labor market trends.

Project Quest Evaluation
P/PV is conducting a study of Project QUEST—a San Antonio-based job training organization that works with local community colleges to make careers in healthcare accessible to a larger pool of residents.

Sector Strategies Practicum
Funded by the New York City Workforce Innovation Fund, the practicum will assist selected New York City organizations in the development of practical plans for launching or strengthening sectoral approaches.

Sectoral Employment Research
Projects that explore the effectiveness of sectoral employment programs.
